Link Popularity
Link popularity and pagerank are closely linked. Link popularity
is simply and measure of the number of external links pointing
to your site.
It was being used by some search engines in calculating
the page rank in terms of returned page positioning from
searches before Google even existed and started using
link popularity as a major determinant of its search
engine results and displaying pagerank statistics.
What is Pagerank?
Link popularity or what was called
'reciprocal link exchange', as outlined above, is slightly
misleading as it is not simply
the number of links but the number of relevant & quality
links. Before Google, search engines merely counted
all the links and ranked a pages' importance accordingly.
Google introduced a level of quality control which
became the basis of their pagerank measure. Quality Incoming Links
Pagerank not only considers the number of incoming
links but also the measured pagerank of the
linking page
ie pages which themselves have many links to them from
high ranking pages pass on to a linked page a portion
of their own rank & importance.
Importance of Pagerank
Finding quality, appropriate and relevant links is important
in achieving top positions in search engine results
pages.
Google Results
Google is generally recognised as serving upto 80% of
web searches and as such regarded as the number one
search engine. Clearly it is important to rank as high
as possible in Google results and to do so needs not
only page content optimised for Google but also to
have as many as possible incoming links from pages
with good rankings in Google.
Linking Text
Recognised as an important element in page optimisation
the text displayed for the Link contributes to
the overall theme of the page. When you provide link information
it is important that the 'Link Text' reflects the content
of linked page. It should be descriptive of your product,
service or theme of the site rather than simply the
site domain name eg 'Holiday Accommodation in Scotland' rather
than simply visitscotland.com.
